In the castle of Rodengo, built in 1140 by the lords of Rodank, frescoes of the early thirteenth century have survived that tell the cycle of Owain, the knight of the lion: not sacred stories, but a chivalric romance painted on the walls of a house. The castle was besieged without success during the peasants' war, and since the sixteenth century it has belonged to the counts of Wolkenstein.
On the Rodengo alp, at the places where hunters used to stop, non-local flint and chips of rock crystal are found: they are seven thousand years old. The name appears as Rotungun in the donation books of Bressanone. The comune, born at the beginning of the nineteenth century, lost its autonomy in 1926 and got it back only in 1955, after a long fight.
