Senales

In 1991, on the glacier at the Austrian border, the Similaun mummy was found: the Copper Age man the world knows as Ötzi. The territory of Senales climbs from the valley floor to more than three thousand six hundred metres, and in that difference lies the reason for the find: up there the ice preserves. In the village there is the ArcheoParc, the museum that tells how people lived here then.

The valley, though, was already a place of monks. On the coat of arms, adopted in 1967, stands the archangel Gabriel with a sword and a pair of scales, on top of a dragon: he is the patron of the Carthusian house of Allerengelberg, and the hamlet where it stood is still called Certosa. Beside him are the arms of the lords of Schlandersberg. In the sanctuary of the Madonna di Senales a wooden statue thirteen centimetres high is venerated.
