Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Tires, a municipality of 967 inhabitants in the province of Bolzano, celebrates its patron Saint George, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The name is very old: it appears as Tieres in a deed of the church of Freising of 993, and comes from the Latin terra. From 1200 to 1470 the village was administered by the lords of Velseck on behalf of the bishop of Brixen, and their badge is still on the arms: a band of silver and blue on a red field, cut in the shape of a helmet.
The church of San Cipriano is late Romanesque and has seventeenth-century paintings on an outside wall; that of San Giorgio, in the cemetery, was rebuilt in baroque form in 1711 over a fourteenth-century building, and keeps a wooden Crucifixion. The village lost the Prato-Tires station at the end of the twentieth century and in 2022 opened instead a cable car, from San Cipriano up to the Frommer alp.
