Verano

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 929 · Postal code: 39010

The name is older than the village: Veran appears in 1186 and comes from the Latin name Ferius, «Ferio's land», after an owner of whom nothing else survives. A century later the land register of Meinhard II of Tyrol-Gorizia records the plateau as ground sown with grain, and that grain stayed in the coat of arms drawn in 1967: the gold band is the cereal fields, the red the porphyry that crops out everywhere, the yoke the cattle-breeding of the time.

Until 1958 people came up on foot or by cart; then arrived the cable car from Postal, renewed twice since, which brought the plateau within a few minutes of the valley floor. The village and the hamlet of Eschio remain almost entirely German-speaking, with the farmsteads set around the parish church of San Nicolò.
