Avelengo

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 739 · Postal code: 39010

The Haflinger horse takes its name from here: Avelengo, which in German is Hafling, and in German the breed is indeed called Haflinger. The village's name is already read in 1170 as Hafningen and comes from hafele, the small farmstead; by its German form it is, along with Hône, one of only two Italian municipalities whose name begins with H.

The village lies on a plateau above Merano and is made of scattered farmsteads around the church, as they built in the time of the Bavarian settlement; the single holdings are already listed in the land register of the counts of Tyrol of 1288. In 1931 Avelengo was merged into Merano and became a municipality again in 1957. In the coat of arms, granted in 1967, there are the horse, the mountain and the pine.
