Saint Andrew, patron of Marciano della Chiana
📅 Every year, on 30 November
Marciano della Chiana celebrates Saint Andrew on 30 November, in the church dedicated to him together with Saint Stephen.
On the second of August 1554, under these walls, the battle of Scannagallo was fought: the Medici army, with the fortress of Marciano as its bulwark, drove back Piero Strozzi's Sienese, and with that day the Republic of Siena ended. Giorgio Vasari painted it twice for the Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence; and the Medici repaid Marciano's service by letting it put the Florentine lily in its arms.
The castle was not made to be lived in: its plan is a rectangle bending into a trapezium, and that sets it apart from the neighbouring villages, built to be dwelt in and not to fight. The name comes from the fundus Marcianus, the estate of a gens Marcia; and of the Etruscans there remains the Torso of Marciano, a warrior of the sixth century before Christ.
