In the town museum stands the Golden Tree: a reliquary two metres sixty high with twelve branches, a crucifix and a pelican at the top, and sprigs of coral standing for the blood of Christ. It was begun in 1350 by Ugolino da Vieri and finished in 1471 by Gabriello D'Antonio: a hundred and twenty-one years for a single object, two goldsmiths who never met.

The walls draw an ellipse and have three gates, all of 1371; one was walled up and took the name Porta Murata, and has lately been opened again. The arms still carry the griffin of Perugia, which ruled here before the Sienese; and the Sienese stayed until 1554, when Florence beat them at Marciano, a few kilometres east.
