Feast of Saint Matthew
📅 Every year, on 21 September
On 21 September Ortignano Raggiolo celebrates Saint Matthew, to whom the parish church is dedicated together with Saint Margaret; the village also hosts the Casentino Chestnut Ecomuseum.
These are two villages in a single comune, joined together in 1873. Raggiolo is the older of the two names: it appears in 967 as Ragiola and comes from the Latin radius, meaning boundary line; Ortignano turns up only in 1247 and probably grows out of a Roman personal name. The coat of arms, granted in 1965, sets the two old municipal emblems side by side, but something was lost along the way: the lion of Ortignano was stripped of the band of the Guidi counts, and Raggiolo's quartered field became a red hourglass.
Up here bread was made of chestnuts for centuries, and at Raggiolo a museum shows the whole process, from the harvest to the flour. The Teggina stream comes down from the Pratomagno gathering hundreds of ditches, and on that water turned the nineteenth-century mills that kept the village alive: one of them, the Mulino di Morino, has been put back in working order. In the village of Raggiolo, which can only be walked, there is now a scattered hotel.
