Fosciandora

Province: Lucca · Region: Tuscany · Population: 621 · Postal code: 55020

For centuries this municipality did not exist as one thing: from 1429, when the Este came into the Garfagnana, its territory was split between two states. The so-called three lands — Treppignana, Riana and Lupinaia — stayed with the Republic of Lucca, while the rest went first to Florence and then, in 1451, to Borso d'Este, ending up in the Duchy of Ferrara. The present boundaries came only in the middle of the nineteenth century.

Until 1850 the Serchio was crossed by boat, and only when the season allowed: in that year the bridge of Ceserana was built. The Germans blew it up in 1944 as they withdrew from the Gothic Line, and it was rebuilt in 1946. In 1923 the municipality, with the whole district of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, had passed from the province of Massa-Carrara to that of Lucca.
