Pieve Fosciana

Province: Lucca · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,418 · Postal code: 55036

For centuries the whole of the Garfagnana could be baptised in one place only, here: a document of 1168 says so, and from that pieve comes half the village's name; the other half is a Roman landowner, Fuscianus. Already in 764 a deed names the parish priest Gunduald, a Lombard, who built his family church at Campori.

The coat of arms is a red heart with the motto Unum sumus, we are one, and it recalls the part the villagers took in the risings inspired by Ciro Menotti: in 1831 the tricolour was displayed here, the first in Tuscany. At the end of the war Pieve Fosciana spent more than seven months just behind the Gothic Line, under artillery fire; on 20 April 1945 the flag went back up the bell tower, perhaps the first beyond the Line.
