Castiglione di Garfagnana

Province: Lucca · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,860 · Postal code: 55033

The church of San Pietro, at the foot of the fortress, was built in 723 by two Lombard brothers, Aurinand and Gudifrid: their names have survived, the church almost has not, for of that first building only the wall against the fortress and the lower part of the front are left.

For centuries Castiglione was a piece of the Republic of Lucca surrounded on every side by the state of the Este: Lucca spent heavily on its walls and towers, because through here ran the road by which Ferrara might have sent troops into the Serchio valley. In 1429 the Florentines laid siege to it, and the people held out until they learned that Paolo Guinigi had fallen in Lucca: then they surrendered. In the coat of arms the lion of the Castrum Leonis stands above the white and red of Lucca.
