The patron saint of Pontremoli is Saint Geminianus, celebrated on 31 January in the Church of San Geminiano, with the lighting of the traditional bonfires.
Deeply felt is the age-old Disfida dei Falò: every year the San Nicolò district, which celebrates on 17 January, and the San Geminiano district, on 31 January, challenge each other by lighting giant bonfires on the banks of the Magra river and the Verde stream. At the end of August, Medievalis re-enacts the 1226 visit of Frederick II, who granted the city the privileges of a free commune. The town also holds the Cathedral of Pontremoli and the Castello del Piagnaro.
