Bagnone

Province: Massa-Carrara · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,926 · Postal code: 54021

Ploughing a field of the counts Noceti, in 1904, the sharecropper Antonio Bassignani turned up a very heavy stone. It stayed at the edge of the field for sixty years, until in 1967 someone took it to the castle and then to the university of Pisa: it was an iron meteorite of forty-eight kilos, the largest ever found in Italy. Today it lies in two pieces, at Milan and at Pisa.

The village is a double one: above, Gutula on its hill, with the castle of the Noceti; below, the Borgo on the stream that gives it its name. Bagnone appears for the first time in 963, in a diploma by which Otto I renewed his protection to the bishop-counts of Luni, and in 1849, after centuries of Tuscany, it was annexed to the duchy of Parma: it stayed there until unification.
