Mulazzo

Province: Massa-Carrara · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,566 · Postal code: 54026

Mulazzo was a sovereign state until 1797, when Napoleon abolished the imperial fiefs. It had been autonomous since 1550, and until 1776 it was governed jointly by two branches of the same family, the Malaspina del Castello and the Malaspina del Palazzo, taking a year each in turn.

The Malaspina had the fief in 1164; the Ghibelline branch, that «of the Dry Thorn», gave shelter to Dante in exile, and his presence in the Lunigiana is proved by the acts of the peace of Castelnuovo, signed on the sixth of October 1306. In the village there is a tower they call Dante's and a museum about his stay. In the countryside, instead, the statue-stelae of the Lunigiana have come to light, carved from the Copper Age onwards.
