Filattiera

Province: Massa-Carrara · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,361 · Postal code: 54023

The name comes from the Greek phylakterion, the watchtower: around 540 Belisarius had the Magra valley barred to stop the Goths before Luni, and from that Byzantine post the village was born. The tower has stayed in the coat of arms. Around the pieve of Sorano seven statue-stelae have been found, the stone figures that in the Lunigiana come millennia before any fortification.

In the church of San Giorgio a stone of 752 is set into the wall, remembering a Lombard bishop praised for having swept away the paganism of these lands: the two things stand a few hundred metres from each other, but no document connects them. In 1221 the division of the Malaspina fief made Filattiera the capital of the branch called of the Flowering Thorn, on the left bank of the Magra.
