The church of San Giorgio stands in San Giorgio a Bibbiano, a village of Cascina in the Arno plain. It is recorded in a deed of 12 April 970, by which the bishop of Pisa, Alberico, granted the parish church of Cascina half of certain lands, revenues and houses.
What to see
The church is in the Pisan Romanesque style, built of regular blocks alternating cavernous limestone and verrucano, the stone of the Pisan mountains. It has a single large nave and one peculiarity: the façade faces south. At the top the façade is cut short and ends in a small, heavy double-arched bell gable, added in 1603.
On the small columns of the bell gable are low reliefs recalling the fight of Saint George with the dragon, the saint to whom the church is dedicated.
Visiting
It is a parish church: mass times and opening hours should be checked with the parish or with the diocese of Pisa.
Our editors' tip
Look on the façade for the plaque marking the flood of 1855: it shows how high the waters of the Arno rose that year; that same year the parish had 934 inhabitants.
