Marliana

Province: Pistoia · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,201 · Postal code: 51010

The arms are a punning shield: the marlia is the metal plate in the mechanism that sets the distance between millstones, and it is there because this was milling country. In the pieve of San Niccolò, documented from 1373, there are works of the Robbia school: a polychrome terracotta Madonna and Child, and two kneeling angels holding candlesticks, attributed to Benedetto Buglioni.

In 1860, when Tuscany voted to join the kingdom of Sardinia, the yes votes here did not reach a majority of those entitled: two hundred and ninety-nine out of one thousand and sixty-four, with record abstention. The castle had been destroyed in 1177 by the forces of Montecatini and rebuilt a few years later; the village still repeats its shape, with steep lanes climbing towards the top.
