On 4 December Montecatini Terme celebrates Saint Barbara, its patron: a winter date, when the spa town belongs to its own people.

Montecatini has been UNESCO-listed since 2021 among the "Great Spa Towns of Europe": the recognition rewards the season when grand dukes and the Belle Époque made it a continental drawing room, its monumental bathhouses — the Tettuccio above all, colonnades and Art Nouveau ceramics — where the waters are sipped while strolling among orchestras and cafés.
Verdi and the greats of opera were regulars; today the spa avenue and parks keep that promenading elegance. The funicular of 1898, among the world's oldest, climbs to Montecatini Alto: the medieval village with its café square and the Valdinievole view.
