Positioned within the Valdinievole basin, Monsummano Terme presents a striking dual geography. The Etruscan heights of Monsummano Alto, enclosed by defensive walls and a Lombard-era castle, gaze down upon the lower town. This newer section developed after 1602 around a sanctuary commissioned by Ferdinand I, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Home to nearly 21,000 residents, the municipality is widely recognized as a thermal spa destination, with the Grotta Giusti thermal cave as its flagship. It also claims a surprising cultural footprint, being the birthplace of Italian poet Giuseppe Giusti and French cinema icon Yves Montand. Travelers should walk up to the ancient settlement before unwinding in the thermal waters below.
