Carmignano di Brenta

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,540 · Postal code: 35010

In the town hall of Carmignano more than a hundred terracotta sculptures are kept: they were made by Giuseppe Monegato, who lived and worked here, drawing on Dante's Inferno and at the same time on the real inferno of the Second World War. His house, in via Roma, he designed himself and frescoed inside with stories from the Bible.

The village stood on the border between Vicenza, Padua and Treviso, and for that reason the Vicentines put a castle here: the Paduans, helped by Ezzelino II, destroyed it in 1198, and its site was traced again only recently. In the seventeenth century the Grimani brought rice fields here; in 1883 the paper mill opened, which by the early twentieth century employed two hundred and fifty workers.
