Blessed Bertrand, patron of the Cathedral of Santa Maria
📅 Every year, on 1 March
Fontaniva celebrates Blessed Bertrand on 1 March, in the cathedral dedicated to him together with Saint Mary.
The name comes from water: this is the belt of resurgent springs, where the upper plain begins to give back what it has absorbed, and fons viva means precisely living spring. Since the early two-thousands excavations have turned up traces of a nomadic people of the Copper Age, called the Bartandi, of whom almost nothing is known: they are the oldest in the upper Paduan plain.
One of the most powerful families of the Padua area took its name from the village, the Fontaniva, who bore a rampant lion; from them the Peraga are said to descend, whose first arms were a yellow wheel on a blue field. The Ezzelini too held property here: it was listed item by item after their defeat in 1260.
