The patron of Este is Saint Thecla, celebrated on 23 September.
The city gives its name to the House of Este, which originated here; every year the Este Medievale association re-enacts the house's ancient splendour with the event "Alla Corte degli Estensi" (At the Court of the Este), featuring historical archery, ancient fencing, dance and fire.
