Feast of the Santissima Trinità
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday after Pentecost
On the first Sunday after Pentecost Arquà Petrarca, a municipality of 1,847 inhabitants in the province of Padua, celebrates its patroness the Santissima Trinità.
Francesco Petrarca got to know Arquà in 1364, while he was at the baths of Abano being treated for scabies. Five years later he was given a piece of land here and moved in during 1370: he called it «my second Helicon». He died here in 1374, and on the church forecourt an ark of red Verona marble was raised for him in 1380. The village took his name in 1868.
The poet's fame built the village and then stopped it: in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the noble families of Padua and Venice, Contarini, Pisani, Zabarella, came to build their houses here; afterwards building almost ceased, and that is why the medieval village is still all there. On the coat of arms, along with the mount and the cross, is Petrarch's laurel crown.
