Carceri

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,600 · Postal code: 35040

The name has nothing to do with prisons. It might come from the Latin carceres, which were pens for horses, or from the small cells that looked onto the cloisters; but the explanation most people follow is another: the calceus, the sandal the Camaldolese of the abbey of Santa Maria wore, so much so that in dialect the village is still called Calzare.

The abbey belonged to canons, who reclaimed the land and raised the banks against the Adige, and then to the Camaldolese, who gave it four cloisters, a library and an academy. In 1690 pope Alexander VIII put it up for auction to pay for the Venetian war against the Turks; then it passed from hand to hand and ended as a farm. In 1951 the counts Carminati gave what was left to the parish. Since 2024 Carceri is no longer a comune: it is part of Santa Caterina d'Este.
