Tribano

In 589 the Adige, which then ran past Este, broke its banks and turned the whole Conselvano into a marsh: it stayed that way until 1000, with a few scattered hamlets on the higher ground and houses of wood, clay and reeds, thatched over, a single room serving every purpose. Then the river was channelled towards the Polesine and the Benedictines drained the land. Tribano was born there, in the middle of water somebody had to move.

Of that reclamation what survives above all is the paperwork. A Paduan law of 1276 sets the local podestà's pay at forty lire a half-year, and in 1281 the village's name appears in the records of the Comune of Padua, on the list of settlements called up to dig canals, raise embankments and keep the ditches clear: the same water as before, turned into administration. Along with Padua, Tribano passed to Venice in 1406 and stayed there until 1797; after annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866 its first mayor was count Pietro Brazolo, and in 1923 a Park of Remembrance was planted for the young men who never came back from the war.
