Pozzonovo

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 3,653 · Postal code: 35020

The name means the new well, and it appears as contrata Puthei Novi in the catastico of Ezzelino, the thirteenth-century parchment that tied the village to the pieve of Monselice. The well that is now the municipal emblem, however, was built only after 1866: the symbol is six centuries younger than the name it is supposed to illustrate. When the coat of arms went up for approval the well stood on a silver field, and it was the heraldic council that changed the ground to blue.

The territory lies between one and six metres above sea level, and it is land taken from the water: drainage began in the sixteenth century and the last marshes were dried only after the First World War, with the hydraulic pump of Ca' Giovanelli. In exchange the parish church holds things one does not expect in a country village: a terracotta Madonna enthroned with the Child, a fifteenth-century work by a pupil of Donatello, and an organ built in 1804 by Gaetano Callido.
