Positioned in the easternmost stretches of the Venetian metropolitan area, Portogruaro anchors a transition zone between the Veneto region and neighboring Friuli. Known locally as Puart in the Friulian language, the town is home to 25,140 residents.
Historically and administratively, it holds significant regional weight. Together with the San Donà di Piave district, Portogruaro and its surrounding network of eleven municipalities form the macro-area designated as Venezia Orientale.

Portogruaro celebrates Saint Andrew the Apostle on 30 November; the town is also known for the «Estate Musicale» International Music Festival, which has enlivened its historic centre from the second half of August to the first half of September since the 1980s.
