Venice stopped being a province on 1 January 2015, when the lagoon administration was replaced by a Metropolitan City — the same 44 municipalities under a new name, and the same oddity: a capital that has nothing in common with the flat mainland behind it. The territory faces the northern Adriatic in the Veneto region, running from the Friuli border down to the province of Rovigo, with Treviso to the north and Padua to the west.

Most visitors never leave the historic islands: St Mark's Square and its basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Rialto Bridge and the Gallerie dell'Accademia stand within walking distance. With a few extra days the rest of the province is worth a train ride — Chioggia and Caorle draw more visitors than anywhere else after Venice itself, Jesolo is a beach town, and San Donà di Piave and Portogruaro show what the mainland is like.
