Here the spring channels are called sortie, that is exits, because the water comes out of the ground by itself. The network has been there since the fifteenth century and served the rice fields and the mills; running water on the surface also makes a microclimate, with less scorching summers and less bitter winters. The finest spring in the area is the fontanon dell'Acqua Chiara, on the road to Raldon. The hamlet of Settimo, on the other hand, owes its name to the seventh mile from Verona on the via Claudia Augusta.

In 1416 the villages of the vicariate of Cà di Campagna, Buttapietra among them, obtained release from feudal subjection and civil jurisdiction over their own territory. From there the transformation of the land began: here there was no draining to do, it was enough to channel the springs. Of that work there is a written trace too: in 1585 one Zampaolo Brà asked the Venetian authorities for leave to reuse an old ditch running from Cà di David down to Buttapietra, to bring water to his fields.
