The patron saints of Villafranca di Verona are Saints Peter and Paul, celebrated on 29 June, the day on which the ancient fair dedicated to them is also held.
The town's cathedral, begun in 1786 and completed in 1882, the year of its consecration, is inspired by Andrea Palladio's design for the Basilica del Santissimo Redentore and is, after the Scaliger Castle, the most important monument in Villafranca. Its construction was repeatedly interrupted and slowed by wars or lack of funds. On 24 June 1866, the municipal territory was also the site of the Battle of the Quadrato di Villafranca during the Third Italian War of Independence, now commemorated by a stone monument.
