Villafranca di Verona

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 32,747 · Postal code: 37069

On 11 July 1859, in a house in Villafranca, Napoleon III and Franz Joseph signed the armistice that ended the Second War of Independence: the "Peace of Villafranca" entered the schoolbooks, and the treaty room can still be visited. The Scaliger castle, flagship of the "Serraglio" defensive system, rules the main street with its battlements.

The town lives on markets and a kilometre-long corso; the sfogliatine, glazed puff-pastry sweets born in the nineteenth century, are the obligatory souvenir. Verona, Lake Garda and Custoza with its white wine are all fifteen minutes away.
