Mozzecane

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 7,005 · Postal code: 37060

The name comes from a thirteenth-century landowner, one Mucius Canis, who obtained a great deal of land from the commune of Verona; his descendants signed themselves de Moçecanis. The municipal arms play on that name: there is an arm in the middle of the flames, which is Mucius Scaevola, the Roman who burned his own hand in front of the enemy king. The purple-red chief, on the other hand, is what remains of the fascist chief, compulsory in the arms granted under that regime.

Between April and September 1943, behind the church of Mozzecane, where the sports grounds are today, there was a prison camp for Allied soldiers, one of many in the Verona area. After the eighth of September the prisoners were deported to Germany; a few managed to escape, and local people hid them and shared with them the little they had, at the risk of the death penalty. In the municipality twenty-two springs and pools are recorded, and out of those waters comes the Nano Vialone Veronese rice.
