Villaga

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,963 · Postal code: 36021

Villaga sits on karst, dry ground, and that decided the shape of the village: the hamlets grew where there was water, around the springs, and on the Pozzolo plateau wells were dug by hand to reach the water table. Many of the fountains have gone. The coat of arms is not the comune's but a family's: the black lion with a forked tail of the Barbaran, feudal lords of the church of Vicenza.

Under a rock face stands the hermitage of San Donato, documented from 1240: the apse of the church leaned against the rock and joined the shelter. In the thirteenth century it became a Benedictine nunnery under an abbess, but in 1326 the nuns bought a house in the city and left. Then the ruin: in the nineteenth century some of the walled-up shelters were lived in. Since 1980 the Alpini of Pozzolo have been putting it back together.
