Pandoro star-shaped Christmas cake, soft, with vanilla icing sugar
Eight points, powdered sugar like snow on a mountain: pandoro was born in Verona in 1894, patented by Domenico Melegatti.
Read more →Up on the Sette Comuni plateau people still speak Cimbrian, a Germanic language that never died out here. That says something about a province usually filed under Veneto industry: it is one of Italy's most industrialised territories and among its biggest manufacturing exporters, and Federico Faggin, the engineer behind the first microprocessor, was born in its main city, Vicenza. The 114 towns of the province run from the Trentino border in the north and west down to the flat country facing Padua and Verona.
In Vicenza itself the Teatro Olimpico is what justifies more than a half-day stop. Beyond the city, the obvious next stop is Bassano del Grappa; the foothill belt of Schio and Thiene and the factory valleys of Valdagno and Arzignano show the working side of the province, which is where the money came from. Not postcard country, and better to know that in advance.
