Read more →Barbarano Mossano was born on 17 February 2018 from the fusion of Barbarano Vicentino and Mossano, and in the process one word quietly fell away: Barbarano dropped the Vicentino it had carried since the years when Italian municipalities were given qualifiers to tell homonyms apart, because the double name was distinctive enough on its own. The coat of arms, granted in 2023, does the same arithmetic: it puts together the tower on the hill that was Mossano's and the dove that was Barbarano's. The territory stretches into the Berici hills, where the summit plateau is a succession of rises and hollows with the slightest of differences in level, in the gentle undulating shape typical of karst.
The most instructive story of this municipality, though, is that of a tramway. Between 1887 and 1979 the flat part was served by two stops of the Vicenza to Noventa to Montagnana tramway, Ponte di Mossano and Ponte di Barbarano; and from 1911 the village of Barbarano had a branch line of its own, three and a half kilometres of track leaving the main line. It lasted thirteen years: in 1924 a ministerial decree closed it, because keeping it would have obliged the designers of the Treviso to Ostiglia railway, then under construction, to build a second flyover in addition to the one already planned. Barbarano was afterwards served by the station of that railway, which has in the meantime been closed down as well.
