On 7 August Bomba, a municipality of 885 inhabitants in the province of Chieti, celebrates its patron Saint Donatus (san Donato).
The name has nothing to do with explosives: it comes from a Latin word meaning a rumble, and may once have pointed to a waterfall that boomed down in the valley. There is still water here: in 1957 the Sangro was dammed and the lake of Bomba formed below the village.
In this village two brothers were born, Bertrando in 1817 and Silvio Spaventa in 1822, and their family was related by marriage to the Croce of Montenerodomo, the family of Benedetto. It was Silvio who made the phrase «ritorniamo a bomba», let us get back to the point, famous in parliament: and he really had been born at Bomba.
