Dogliola

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 389 · Postal code: 66050

In 1115 one Ugo di Grandinato gave the castle of Dogliola to the abbot of Sant'Angelo in Cornacchiano: it is the first time the village appears in a document. The village runs all along a ridge, with the houses in rows like the teeth of a comb; some of them served as walls, and the arcades and pieces of the gates remain.

The fortified palace, that of the Della Fazia, is of the sixteenth century. In the church of San Rocco, which already existed in 1568, the doorway and the great window are of carved stone and bear the date 1805; inside are paintings by Nicola Sigismondi, of Lanciano. On the first of May people walk in pilgrimage to Palmoli, to the sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine.
