On the last Friday of May Montemitro, a municipality of 454 inhabitants in the province of Campobasso, celebrates its patroness Santa Lucia.
Here Saint Lucy is not celebrated on 13 December as she is everywhere else, but on the first and last Fridays of May. It commemorates the crossing of the Adriatic: in the fifteenth century the ancestors of these families arrived carrying a statue of the saint, and came ashore on a Friday in May.
Montemitro — Mundimitar — is one of three villages in Molise where Croatian is still spoken, in a dialect they call na-našo, our way. The first settlement was at a place called Selo, which is simply Croatian for village. But the place existed before that: it appears as Monte Metulo in a chronicle of 1024. It now has 454 residents.
