Fallo

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 146 · Postal code: 66040

In the parish church there is a bell bearing an inscription one does not often read: the people of Fallo, rejoicing at the recovery of their civic autonomy, offer this bell to the church in everlasting memory. The date is 1963. The comune had been abolished in 1927 and merged into Civitaluparella; it took thirty-six years and a referendum for it to exist again, and the following year, in 1964, Civitaluparella had to hand over the territory. Not everyone gets to have a bell cast to celebrate themselves.

Before that the village had changed hands several times, and of one of those we even know the price: in 1590 the man who had bought it seven years earlier sold it on for eighteen thousand ducats. Of that world two clusters of farm houses remain, Borgo Valle Vecchia and Borgo Pietra Antica, today almost entirely empty: byres and cellars on the ground floor, and the upper floors reached by outside stairs resting on barrel vaults and flying arches. Outside the village stands the walled fountain, of squared stone, with three spouts and two drinking troughs.
