Quadri

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 863 · Postal code: 66040

The name comes from the quadre, the four-square plots of land granted to the local peasants; and the village took the hint, for its territory is quadrangular too, the smallest in the Sangro valley, and the arms carry a little red square. Benedictine monks founded it between the tenth and eleventh centuries, above Trebula, the town of the Carricini Samnites.

In 1628 the marquis Periteo Malvezzi sold it to baron Giannicola Coccia for seven thousand seven hundred and fifty ducats. Much later, when the Gustav Line ran through here, German troops levelled almost the whole village: it was the inhabitants themselves who raised it again, and then, with the money gone, they left for northern Europe and the Americas. Today people come back for the white truffle.
