The village clings to the rock that gives it its name: a grey spur with little pinnacles, made of sandstone, limestone and clays, with a surface layer of graphite on which the odd small plant struggles to grow. Below, on the other side, lies the lake of Bomba: the village stands right behind the reservoir, and with the neighbouring municipalities it has set up a building serving as a hotel and a hire point for boats and sailing dinghies.
The first document to name it is the Catalogus Baronum, of the twelfth century: Pietraferrazzana had to supply the Norman king with a miles, a mounted man-at-arms with his men on foot. Twenty-four families were counted here then, between one hundred and forty and one hundred and seventy people: more than the village has today. In 1923 it lost its town hall and became a hamlet of Colledimezzo; it became a municipality again in 1963.
