In Francavilla's "Conventino" at the close of the nineteenth century, painter Francesco Paolo Michetti gathered the salon that made Abruzzo a national artistic case: D'Annunzio wrote pages of "Il Piacere" here, Tosti composed, Barbella sculpted. The Michetti Prize, since 1947, keeps that flame of art alight. The old town was destroyed by war in 1943-44: what you see is a modern seaside rebirth.
Today Francavilla is the elegant tail of the Pescara riviera: sandy beaches, a cycling seafront and the Trabocchi Coast beginning just south. Art and beach umbrella, without contradiction.
