San Giovanni Teatino

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 12,733 · Postal code: 66020

San Giovanni Teatino has 12,733 inhabitants between Chieti and Pescara, and until 1894 it was called Forcabobolina: forca is the narrow valley, and the rest comes from the Latin bos, the ox. The new name puts together the patron saint and the province, because teatino means of Chieti. The first mention is from 1095, when the Norman count Robert of Loritello gave the bishop of Chieti a castle of Forca and a silva di Sambuceti, that is a wood of elders: that wood is Sambuceto today, the hamlet down in the valley.

In 1958 the town hall moved down there, because by then the factories, the warehouses and the people were all in the valley, while the old borgo stayed up on the hills among the badlands. Part of the runway of Pescara airport also ends up in the comune's territory. In the middle of the shopping centres of Sambuceto, since 2012, the church of San Rocco designed by Mario Botta has been going up: a single volume of travertine some thirty metres high, with one single opening, a large cross-shaped window at the top.
