The name of this village has never stood still. In 1150 they wrote it Munt'frand, then Mons Ferrantus, Mons Ferrandus, Monte Fernando, Mons Ferrante, Mon Ferrans, and between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Mons Ferdinandus: eight forms in eight hundred years, swinging back and forth between Ferrante and Ferdinando. On the second half of the name three explanations compete: an Aragonese king, a lord of the Caracciolo house, or the iron-hard fortification of the village, of which, however, only a gate and a stretch of wall remain.
What the village was worth we know precisely: in 1320, in the Angevin assessment, it was rated at five ounces and four tarì. Today it is among the least populated comuni in Abruzzo, and in the middle of its square stands a monumental fountain of mineral water, free to all, drunk for kidney stones and for salt-free diets. On the evening of the eighteenth of March the families with a vow to discharge lay a table in their own house and open it to relatives and strangers: the food is eaten standing, while litanies are recited.
