Sant'Angelo del Pesco

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 368 · Postal code: 86080

The village was called Sant'Angelo del Grifone; in 1320 the name became Sanctus Angelus de Pesculo, and in 1452 the census counted it thirty-two hearths. Then the war came: sitting on the Gustav Line, it was flattened by bombardment except for a very few buildings, and rebuilt from scratch — hence the terraced quarters, the UNRRA village and the Europa village.

Outside the village, in the woods, is the hermitage of San Luca, carved into a cave with a small church beside it: from its natural rock balcony you look out over the fir wood and the Sangro valley. The village, 368 residents, spirals up the Colle della Lama.
