Cappelle sul Tavo

Province: Pescara · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 3,959 · Postal code: 65010

The name is a chapel: from late Latin cappella in the sense of a covered place, a shrine. The village is recent and came into being from below: in the seventeenth century it was a cluster of peasant houses depending on the università of Moscufo, one of the many settlements formed with the arrival of Balkan populations, the Schiavoni, who settled in various parts of the Abruzzo countryside. From 1811 it was a district of Montesilvano; it obtained its own comune in 1904 under the name Cappelle, and in 1912 added the river, becoming Cappelle sul Tavo.

The two main roads that cross the village have had a noisy life: they were part of the Pescara circuit, whose route ran through the built-up centre, and on them the Coppa Acerbo was raced from 1924 to 1961. Between the wars and until the nineteen-sixties the village also had the Pescara–Penne railway, with two stations later turned into private houses; the line can still be read in the fields, and a cycle path is planned along it. Since 1976, every Ferragosto, the districts compete in the Palio delle pupe, with figures of papier-mâché.
