Spoltore has already been Pescara once: annexed in 1928, it broke away again in 1947. In 2014 the inhabitants voted to do it over, and the yes won by a hair; the Nuova Pescara has since been put off to 2022, then 2023, and finally 2027.
The name most likely comes from the Lombard spelt, the emmer that was grown here; another reading takes it back to the Latin sepultorium, the place where one buries. The first documents call it castrum spulturii, and the year is 972. In 1496 the fief went to Ferdinando Castriota, and in fifty years the town took the shape it has today. There are 18,566 residents.
