Sant'Eusanio del Sangro

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 2,453 · Postal code: 66037

The name of this village is a miracle. The oldest historically attested toponym is Monteclo; according to a codex found beside the saint's relics — described in 1748 by Giuseppe Coppola, bishop of L'Aquila, who judged it earlier than 1198 — Eusanio, bishop of Siponto, passing through here gave back her sight to a blind woman named Teoconia. On the spot a church was raised in memory of the episode, and little by little the name of the sanctuary spread to the houses around it. In a diploma of 1176 the two names appear side by side, Monteclo and Sant'Eusanio with its castle: a single sheet of parchment catches the change as it happens.

The village, moreover, had to be filled. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the tax registers listed these lands among the fondi rustici et disabitati, the farming properties without inhabitants; people came by immigration, drawn by the fertility of the soil and the healthiness of the climate, and by 1805 there were already one thousand two hundred and fifty. The three fiefs that made up the territory — Santa Colomba, Villa Sant'Eusanio and Buontalento — were united from 1607 onwards, after passing in commendam to the Oratorians of Saint Philip Neri in Rome, who later recovered them in emphyteusis for two thousand two hundred ducats a year and held them until 1873, when they were declared public property.
