Perano

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 1,664 · Postal code: 66040

The name is still argued over: some read into it a Perius who owned the estate, others the Greek perì with the Latin amnis, «beyond the river» — and Perano does indeed sit on the right bank of the Sangro. Popular tradition, which scholars say has no historical or literary foundation at all, instead derives it from pears, whose trees are supposed to have covered the whole hill of the village. And the pears won: in the arms granted in 1999 there stands, on the middle one of five golden hills, a green pear tree loaded with seven golden pears, with a star and a cross at the sides of its trunk.

The village appears for the first time in a chronicle in 873. The earthquake of 1456 emptied it, and in the papers of the commendatory abbots of San Giovanni in Venere it became a «villa diruta», a village in ruins. In 1585 Perano passed to the congregation of Filippo Neri, and the Oratorian fathers put it back on its feet: they built a palace of control with an oven inside it and the tax office, called the Casone — which today is the town hall. In the eighteen hundreds a Protestant colony grew here and made itself a church, now deconsecrated; then, at odds with the parish, it moved to nearby Palombaro and made itself another one there.
