Barete

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 679 · Postal code: 67010

In the tenth century the village was called Lavareta, from the water plants that grew in the wet ground. Then the first syllable was taken for the article — «la Vareta» — and was lost, and the v turned into a b: so Barete was left. Earlier still, when there were thermal springs here, the people of Amiternum came to spend the summer.

In the thirteenth century the castles of the county founded L'Aquila, and the men of Barete were given the lot at the western end of the walls: the gate they opened there is still called porta Barete. In 1254 they also built their own church of San Paolo inside, in line with the gate. The one at home, in the cemetery, is of the sixth century, over an Ostrogothic burial ground.
